Revelation 2:8-11 | Smyrna: Faithful Unto Death
Jun 29, 2025 • Rick Hardison
What gives Christians the courage to remain faithful when following Jesus comes at a cost? In Revelation 2:8–11, Jesus speaks to the suffering church in Smyrna—a congregation facing poverty, slander, imprisonment, and even death. Rather than promising an escape from hardship, Jesus assures them that He sees their suffering and calls them to persevere. Their present trials must be viewed in light of their eternal future: those who remain faithful will receive the “crown of life.” Through the powerful story of Polycarp, a later pastor of the church in Smyrna, this message reminds us that suffering is temporary, Christ is present, and the reward awaiting His people is greater than anything they may lose in this life.
