Matthew 5:13-20 | You are the Salt of the Earth
Feb 12, 2023 • Rick Hardison
What does it mean for Christians to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world”? In Matthew 5:13–20, Jesus teaches that the faithful lives and good works of ordinary believers can make a meaningful difference in the world around them. Whether through honesty, mercy, forgiveness, peacemaking, or perseverance, Christians can influence others and bring glory to God—even when their contributions seem small. Yet Jesus also reminds us that our best efforts can never make us righteous enough to enter God’s kingdom. Our good works matter, but they cannot save us. The good news is that Jesus perfectly fulfilled God’s law. We are called to shine brightly while ultimately depending on His righteousness, not our own.
