Matthew 5:1-12 | Blessed are the Losers
Feb 5, 2023 • Rick Hardison
What does Jesus have to say to those who feel like they’re losing at life? In Matthew 5:1–12, the Beatitudes turn our definition of blessing upside down. Jesus speaks hope to the poor in spirit, the mourning, the meek, the persecuted, and others the world might overlook. Their present suffering is not the end of the story. For those who follow Christ, future blessing will far outweigh present loss: they will be comforted, satisfied, shown mercy, and welcomed into God’s kingdom. And Jesus does more than teach these truths—He embodies them. He knows what it means to suffer and lose, ultimately giving His life so that His people might gain eternal life.
