Matthew 26:1-5 | Jesus is in Charge as He Dies

Who was really in control as Jesus moved toward the cross? In Matthew 26, Jesus is not merely the central figure in the story of His death—He is directing the events. From the timing of His crucifixion to the Passover meal, Judas’s betrayal, Peter’s denial, His arrest, and His trial, Jesus demonstrates that the cross was never an accident or God’s backup plan. Even the evil actions of others are ultimately channeled toward God’s sovereign purposes without making God the author of evil. This truth offers profound comfort in suffering: when circumstances feel chaotic and others seem to be in control, Christians can trust that Jesus is still directing the story—and that their story ultimately ends in resurrection and glory.
