1 Timothy 3:2-3 | We Need More Shepherds

Nov 16, 2025  •  Rick Hardison

What kind of character should define a pastor? In 1 Timothy 3:2–4, Paul focuses less on impressive skills or accomplishments and more on the everyday character of a faithful Christian. Pastors must be above reproach—faithful in marriage, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, gentle, and free from the love of money. This message explores why churches need more shepherds, why pastors should emerge from within the congregation, and how a plurality of qualified leaders can provide greater care, accountability, and stability. Ultimately, pastoral qualifications are not an impossible standard reserved for spiritual superstars. They describe mature Christian character shaped by the Holy Spirit—and remind us that faithful shepherds must lead with conviction, humility, generosity, and gentleness.
