1 Timothy 1:1-2 & Acts 16:1-5 | Aspiring to be a Pastor

What does Timothy’s story teach us about Christian leadership? Before beginning a study of 1 Timothy, this message turns to Acts 16 to explore how Timothy entered ministry and what his example reveals about pastors. Timothy didn’t have the perfect family, age, health, personality, or résumé, yet God had been preparing him for ministry in unexpected ways. His story shows that pastors need other pastors, often begin shepherding before receiving a title, and don’t need a dramatic or mystical calling to pursue ministry. Instead, godly character, a strong reputation, a desire to serve, and affirmation from other believers matter deeply. Ultimately, pastoral ministry requires sacrifice—but offers the remarkable privilege of strengthening Christ’s church and advancing the gospel.
